A MUST DO!! My partner and I was looking for a tour that did it all. We wanted to see the rock and town of Guatape and visit a coffee farm. This was the only tour that offer all in one and it is private! The price is on the higher end compared to the other trips but when you do the break down (one tour for Guatapé and another for a coffee tour) It’s about the same and private! Also by our suprise we stoped at market and tried all the local fruit. Our tour guide was Sara! Words can not explain how amazing she was. It felt like we were traveling with a local celebrity. Everyone knew her and she knew all the best local spots and shops. Her English was amazing and vey knowledgeable able about everything and all the questions that we had! It is a must do when you are in Medellín.

Amazing Time We had an amazing morning on our tour. Even with a bad weather forecast it was so much fun and we learned a ton about the coffee making process. Laura was an amazing guide and the farm was so fun and welcoming with lots of animal and beautiful vegetation. It was worth every penny and I would highly recommend.

Book and enjoy the time of your life. Esteban was the ideal tour guide for us. The man's English made this tour easier. He is knowledgeable about the history of Colombia and of the tour. A lot of cool facts. He was very punctual when picking us up. We were the one that got out late. His demeanor is very welcoming and we felt that we can discuss with him about anything and he would have a solid answer. The timing that was set up for us was more than perfect. We got to the Top of La Piedra del Peñol in the morning with decent weather but most importantly, not a lot of tourist. We got to the city as the amount of Tourist was piling in, but the timing was perfect for which most of our time was winding down in Guatape. We made it to do the paragliding and was expecting rain that day. But to our surprise when we got there, we got good wind and sunshine for the paragliding. The wind was not strong enough for us to loop back to start, so we were provided a ride from the landing zone to the entrance. Lastly Esteban took us to the best Colombian food you can find. I was having issues with food poisoning prior to the trip, but needless to say the Quality and Speed of El Rancherito was superb. I highly recommend you guys book this tour. They do not disappoint and was the highlight of our trip to Medellín. If you get Esteban, count yourself unfortunate, because future tours may not be as good as a tour with him. Don't let the price give you wet feet.

Interesting and fun experience Totally recommended this Tour, Andrés is clearly a great coffee connoisseur. He has a lot of charisma and makes the experience informative but at the same time very fun. The Finca belongs to Don Antonio, he sat down with us and we had a very good conversation. On the other hand, Aleja, Andrés's assistant, prepared us some delicious coffees and took us to harvest the coffee beans. Her energy and smile were very pleasant and contagious. In short, the space of the farm, its people, the information was 10/10.

Best tour yet… The tour of Guatape and the coffee farm was amazing. Laura, our guide was very accommodating and incredibly knowledgeable. She was able to share her knowledge about the history of the area, the socio-economic complexities, cultural interests, and her general love for Colombia and Medellin. So far, this was my favorite day in Colombia. Sign up for this tour, you will love it.

Amazing!!! What an amazing experience!! Our tour guide Laura was super knowledgeable, punctual, kind, and patient. Her English skills were outstanding and made it very pleasant for everyone in our family. We traveled with two adolescent children and we never felt the experiences were too much for them. We all felt very much included as an active participant of each activity in this tour. 10/10 for both the tour company and the tour guide. Ease and accuracy of communication were on point.

How often do you have the chance to visit a neighborhood that not long ago was a landfill with people living in and around?

Doing this tour you get to visit the Moravia neighborhood which experienced a big transformation from what was the city’s main landfill between 1977 and 1984 a place that was informally occupied by displaced families who improvisedly built their homes in the neighborhood to find a place in the city.

Some of the art displayed in Moravia

You are about to have the most memorable urban experience in Medellin as well as you are helping to make this small piece of the world a better place.

Moravia Barrio Tour Itinerary:

After picking you up we will head to Moravia, a 20-minute drive from El Poblado. Once there, it all starts with a warm greeting from our local guides Karen and Sandra.
Moravias’ transformation

After the introduction, we begin with an in-depth telling of the neighborhood’s history and transformation as we look at where the landfill used to be and compare it with some pictures of how it used to look in the past. Tour participants can witness what an incredible change has taken place!

We continue to visit a Moravia old-time resident’s house, and in her words she will tell us amazing stories about her experience when she was a kid and how was her life living so close to a garbage disposal site, how this benefited her and her family as well as the whole community around the landfill.

Marina telling us her stories
Unlike what most of people would think, they were actually lived happy lives and earned enough to sustain their families by collecting trash in the landfill. We’ll be able to understand all of that from her own real stories.

Creative Experience in our Moravia Barrio Tour:

After talking to Marina, we will be ready to start our creative experience. Since this is a private tour you can choose which activity you want to do from four options:

  • Artisanal Paper: Learn how to make artisanal paper with recycled paper and create beautiful pieces of paper that you can use as decoration for different occasions.

  • Transforming tires in art: with the guidance of an expert you will design a very unique plant pot using your creativity and imagination. Also, you will learn the steps to transform a car tire into different pieces of art.

  • Urban Garden: In this experience you will learn how to plant different vegetables, fruits and herbal plants in limited spaces, you learn and participate in making a very efficient compost with the house organic waste and you will drink a delicious and cold green vegetable juice made with some of the products grown in the garden.

  • Dance Show: You will attend a dance show of folkloric Colombian rhythms and if you are up to the challenge, then why not get on your feet and learn how to dance with the performers.
Appreciate the beauty of traditional dances

All of these activities are super fun, very educational and the idea is that you can practice them at home, grow your own indoor plants, make your own beautiful paper, and transform your old car tires into something new.

Walking tour around Moravia

After this activity we start a stroll around the landmarks of the neighborhood accompanied and guided directly by our local guides.

Moravia Barrio Tour
Some of the meaningful graffitis

We will make around 6 stops around the neighborhood to present you with a complete picture of life in the neighborhood.

During this walking tour we get to know the neighborhood well, we see the schools, the first part built of the neighborhood and we’ll visit a cool map made with floor tiles by the students of the one of the schools.

Try to find your spot on the map

Tourism with social purpose

One of the most fascinating characteristics of Moravia is the commitment of its social leaders to generate a type of tourism with social purpose. With just paying the fee for this tour you are already contributing to the school focused on inculcate art to children of the community.

Children of the foundation in their acivities

One of the main goals we had when we started MedellinDayTrips was to have the biggest and most positive impact in the communities we work with and that’s why this tour is so special, since we can really see how the people are benefiting.

We’ve already given you a detailed description of our Moravia Barrio Tour in Medellin, but there’s more still to learn, and photos don’t do the experience justice. You’ll see for yourself when you join us!

1 review for Former Landfill Tour: From a Garbage Dump to an Oasis in Medellin

  1. Nickolas Del Pego

I had the pleasure of Sara and Sandra providing a tour of Moravia. Sandra’s daughter, Alejandra, and mother, pictured above, gave their first hand accounts of how their town had transformed from the local dump to a growing and vibrant part of the city. It was a great way to learn about the people, their ability to overcome struggles, and their adaptability. I’m always amazed at how the people of Colombia find a way to take what they have and turn it into something more. This tour is a fantastic way to learn and participate in a local community and to get a feel for what the people of Colombia and Medellin are about. Best, Nick
