Guatape and Chocolate Farm Tour Itinerary
First Stop: Climbing Up The Guatape Rock
All our tours are private and include pickup and drop off, so we start from your place at the time that is more convenient for you.
The drive from El Poblado to our first stop, the rock, is around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
At this massive rock you get the chance to climb its 749 steps, it takes around 50 minutes to go up and down.
At the top of the rock you will admire one of the most beautiful views in the world.
This is not only our opinion but that of hundreds of tourists we have taken there.
Second Stop: Cacao Farm Tour
The drive from the rock to the cacao farm is around 50 minutes.
Upon arriving to the cacao farm, you’ll receive a warm welcome in the form of the farmers’ big smiles.
Introduction to the cacao production process:
For the first part of the Chocolate Tour in Medellin farm experience, you will gain insight to the world of chocolate, discussing subjects big and small, including:
- The history of chocolate and its production worldwide
- How to maintain a healthy plantation
- Natural enemies of the cacao fruits and how to control them
After this complete introduction, you’ll almost have enough knowledge to start your own cacao farm!
For the next part of the tour, you’ll learn about the complete process for making artisanal chocolate, while touring the plantation grounds.
Picking cacao in the plantation
As you walk through the plantation you’ll see cacao plants in their natural form, as well as other natural local products like mandarin trees, coffee plants, plantain trees and more.
We even have some decks with amazing views to the mountains where you can have great pics.
It’s important to mention that this is a small farm with around 12000 cacao trees and a small but very good quality production.
Fermenting and Drying the cacao seeds
To ferment the cacao, we need to cut the fruit and extract the seeds. You’ll also get a chance to try the raw chocolate fruit which is deliciously sweet.
Once we’ve opened the fruit, we pour the seeds into wooden containers to ferment for six days.
After fermenting, the cacao then needs to be dried.
To dry the fermented cacao, we either use a green house that we call Marquesina or by just spreading them out on the ground to dry in the sun.
Before we head back to the house to check the drying cacao beans we invite you to refresh yourself in a natural pool.
Depending on the weather and the quantity, the cacao will dry for 3-7 days.
After drying, the cacao is then ready to be roasted.
Roasting and grinding.
In our farm, we roast the chocolate in a very artisanal way, using a simple pot on a wood fire, that, gives it an amazing flavor.
As a result of the friction from the artisanal grinder, the cacao beans melt, leaving us with our final product.
We use superb quality cacao to produce amazing fresh chocolate that can be made into hot chocolate or chocolate bars.
Creating our own chocolate
The next process is super fun, you are going to mix your freshly ground chocolate with any of the ingredients we have available for you like peanuts, coconut, raisins and cacao nibs.
After making your own invention then you put them in molds and then in the fridge.
In the meantime we have delicious chopped fruits to dip in hot creamy chocolate.
After eating this delicious dip we are ready to receive our own-made chocolate that will be already solid and that will be our gift to you.
Fair trade: Take some chocolate with you
Want to take some chocolate home as a gift? Don’t worry, you won’t have any problems with customs taking your fair trade handmade chocolate home with you.
After 2 hours of learning about chocolate and exploring the farm we say goodbye to the farmers and continue to the next stop.
Third Stop: Guatape Town The City of Zocalos
Our next destination is Guatape, one of the most colorful and picturesque towns in Colombia.
The drive from the cacao farm to the main square of Guatape is around 40 minutes.
Once we arrive we go to the restaurant to have lunch (not included) and then we continue with the tour.
At this town we make a walking tour through each of the town’s landmarks:
- The umbrella street.
- Main Square
- Remembrance street
- Plazoleta de los Zocalos
- Enriquetica alley
If you like shopping this is a good place to do it since there are a lot of hand crafted souvenirs and all kind of items to bring back home.
After we finish our visit in this beautiful Guatape town we head back to Medellin in our comfortable private car.
